Tell us about your favourite 'Dangerous Place'...

Wed Feb 18, 2009, 8:36 AM
...or one of your favourites, if you happen to have a long list. :D

I think most of us have places that we know (at least on a purely rational level) we probably should steer clear of. But we go there anyway, either out of necessity, a false sence of immortality, or simply because we like (on a less rational level) to hang out in sketchy places.

So, in keeping with our Dangerously Cool theme, we'd like to hear about one of your Dangerous Places.

I'll lead off with one of mine (I have a few ;-) ):

I love to climb, but since I live near the Florida coast I am usually restricted to climbing buildings and trees. One of the closest big chunks of rock, and one of my favourites ever since first going there in the Army, is Mt. Yonah, located in North Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest. At 3,143 ft., Yonah is by no means a terribly large or menacing mountain, but it's got some challenging features and the view from the top, especially in the wee hours of the morning under a bright moon, is worth the work to get there. Here's a link to a terrain view, if you are interested: [link]

Now let's hear about yours...

About ][ Dangerously Cool

Guns, blades, crazy people, fast vehicles, dangerous places; what else?

Whether you are an artist who has an interest in these things solely for the sake of your art or you are a nut who enjoys edgy stuff first hand, I wanted to let you know about a brand new project.

It's a news/lifestyle web journal and web-based video program (along with a community site) called 'Dangerously Cool' [link] and it deals only with stuff that fits that general description; weapons, fast vehicles, crazy people, training, places that your mom wouldn't want you to visit - you get the idea.

So far, it is a written web journal, but we are already in production on the new show.

The main difference between ][DC (as we call it, or just ][ ) and DS2 is that where DS2 is broader and promotes doing all sorts of interesting stuff, ][DC is very specifically focused on cool stuff with an edge.

Looking forward to seeing you over there, if you are so inclined. And I would love to hear your ideas for future posts and shows.

More soon. Be Well.
Jade

Jade's Stock Photo Request Policy:
----------------------------------------
As of March 2008, the only stock photos I will produce will be requests. If you need something specific for a project, I'd love to hear your pitch. To clarify, I'm not looking for ideas (I've got plenty of those), I am interested in collaborating with serious artists who need specific images or references. Please see this journal entry for complete details: [link]

Cool site. :D

My favorite dangerous place is the floor of a good concert, the most memorable one was Slayer; about 5 feet from the stage. A mix of loud music, pain, people, and the adrenaline.

Went home that night with bleeding knuckles and a black eye, and bruises all over.

Hmm, my favourite dangerous place. Well, I've been to Stone Mountain Park in my state when I was younger, and quite a few times growing up. The most recent was a family get together. Now, the [not so] dangerous part was climbing up the side of the waterfall. If you do it right, you're just fine. Some people are really dumb and just clamber up like it's your average rock, but it's very smooth. Next time we head up there I may find a [safer] way of getting up to take some better photos. I had some shots in my gallery; I may re-post them sometime... if I can find them.

If you like climbing, NC has lots of great places if you haven't been around here at all.

Wow, I nearly forgot about Slayer. One of the only hardcore bands left that doesn't do cliche' music. You know, like those predictable breakdowns, lead up to the breakdowns, etc. Speaking of shows, my bf went to a Torchrunner show last night. I can tell he had a blast. When the bands are good, hardcore shows rock. Though I'm more of a metal/thrash person. I really like to mix it up.

Hmmmm.... I'm pretty cautious by nature, so I don't really do "dangerous" things, but in the past I've done some pretty reckless things. :P When I was little (probably 7 or 8) we had a welsh pony mare that was almost completely wild, and was terrified of everything and everyone. We never knew what would set her off, but her eyes would just glaze over, and she would flip out. It took 4 people to work her into a corner with ropes just to get a halter on her. One day, she was out in the field by herself, and she was sleeping on her side, with her legs tucked up like this [link] and I just walked out to her and climbed on her back. She laid there perfectly calm and let me sit on her. I can remember my mom hanging out the front door with the phone in one hand screaming "Get off that horse, she'll kill you!!!!!" But the horse was fine. After that, I was the only one who could get near the horse. It was kind of ironic, because I was always really tiny when I was younger -- skin and bones, and really short. She was especially terrified of men, so whenever the vet came, he had to show me how to do all the check-ups and shots and do them for him because he couldn't get near the mare, but this tiny little 8-ish-year-old could. ;P

Well, that's my little story of danger. :)

So true! Extremely fun, but also potentially dangerous. I have similar fond memories of Ministry and Front 242. Great one.

Great stuff. I love NC, and have been lucky enough to climb there fairly often. I would spend a large portion of the year there, if I could.

And you are so right about people bringing their own danger with them to otherwise fairly safe places.

That's a fantastic story (and very well told)! Do you still have mystical power of dangerous animals?

Dangerous places? Ice caves...I live quite close to a glacier, and while walking on one is exciting, walking beneath with tons of blue ice overhead, that creaks and groans is an experience I wouldn't trade for the world. It's almost a wonderland, in itself.

Actually, my dangerous place is also the place I think of when told to think of somewhere "special" in a guided meditation or something. Some of my friends have a house out on the coast of Washington state. At night, after everyone has gone to bed, I like to climb out of the window and sit on the roof. The patch I prefer is really more of an overhang under the windows on the second floor, so if I slipped there wouldn't be a lot of room to stop myself, and it's my favorite if there's a slight mist or drizzle and a cool wind, which increases both my chances of slipping and of getting too cold without noticing it. But it's totally worth it to hear the sound of the waves and feel the nighttime air coming in off the ocean.

Ok, so it's a little tame... but not to hear my mom tell it when she catches me out there :P
