Anyone want some stock?

Thu Mar 6, 2008, 8:52 PM
Howdy, Cats:

Well, it looks like it is time to get the ball rolling once again. There are a couple of fun things in the works, but for today at least let's take them one at a time.  The first is this:

I'm changing my policy on requests in that, for the foreseeable future, I will ONLY be doing requests.

There's only one caveat (and I guess it may not be a small one); you have to spark my imagination.  You have to wow and challenge me. You have to make me dig your concept as much as you dig it.  No small feat, I know, but those are the table stakes.

You can try to do that any way you like; send a note, use your previous work, hit me on Skype or AIM (jademacalla on both, but I prefer Skype and I'm cool with voice or video), accost me in an elevator and pretend I'm a venture capitalist.  Whatever works; the more creative the better.

As you might imagine, time is a precious commodity these days, so I won't be able to accept every request (that's why the "Wow factor" is important) - but if you hook me, and we book it, I'll do everything I can to get you the stock you are looking for (within the limits of my personal gear, costumes, weaponry, schedule, and silly-@$$ facial expressions, of course ;-) ).

This is an experiment, and like all cool experiments it may crash and burn; but let's have some fun giving it a shot. Make a good pitch and let's see what we can create together.

A Great Example
The following comes from that extremely talented compositor, Dragon-Kiss.  This is a great example of a solid pitch.  It tells me in good detail what you are looking for, provides references, and, in this case, it creates a little mystery about what the project is all about.

From :icondragon-kiss:
I would like to place a stock order. I need a handyman/construction worker. I'm trying to make one but the angles don’t match because its a back shot. Let me break this down.

Assume that you hammered a nail on the wall accidentally knocking the entire wall down and you see something you shouldn’t.

I need a body angle like this shot. Draft1 by Dragon-Kiss

An embarrassed expression on your face. :thumb71682327: One hand on your mouth like the other holding a hammer (not behind you back). Your head turned right looking at another shocked employee who is right next to you.

Outfit.

Work gloves, Shirt (anything that you would normally have on while working on the house). Jeans, If you have a work belt that would be nice and boot like shoes. Should you have those plastic hats construction workers have use that too.

More soon,
Jade

Hi.

I am interested in doing some shots like the brief you describe, but I'm afraid it will probably be a couple weeks before I am able to (and, depending on circumstances, it may be longer than that). Sorry if you are not able to wait that long.

On the off chance that they may still be useful to you when I finally post them, I am interested in hearing the type of lighting you are looking for; even and well lit or dramatic with lots of contrast.

Be well. Really like your gallery.

I don't mind at all, I'm in no rush. As for the lighting I trust your judgement as I will be looking for the pose first and then the shadows 2nd. If I change my mind I'll tell you.

Are you still taking requests? if you are, I have one to submit.

I have a Shadowrun character that I'm trying to draw a specific scene from one of our runs in. It's just a face-forward shot of her getting shot in the left shoulder and falling backward to the floor. yeah, she's a female, but it's really the foreshortening and surprised/ouch/oh fuck expression I can't quite nail down. I can easily adjust for gender. She's a gun bunny with wired reflexes anyway. :)
it would be easiest for me if you took the shot in something sleeveless, simple so that I can see the directions the muscles take.

thanks for the consideration and the great stock you've provided thus far!

Hey there. I generally don't take requests short of full-on collaborations, but I quite unexpectedly had a couple minutes to try a few of these after the SR Charade shoot tonight. I was working with extremely low light, so they are blurry, but perhaps they will help you somewhat with your image. If you'll let me know an e-mail address to send them to, I'll zip them up and ship them over.

Best regards,
Jade

Good morning!

I want to draw the Grim Reaper but I am having problems. I don't own a scythe or have the ability to get one and the dark hooded cape is equally hard to come by. I was hoping you would be able to help me out. I am looking for a male model to pose with said scythe (or similar object) and a cape so I have an idea as to how the farm implement is used, etcetera. In particular, I am interested in an angled shot from the ground, with "Death" standing over the camera... as if the viewer is at the business end of the scythe. I would like to see the hands and forearms, but everything else can either be heavily shadowed or draped accordingly. Ideally the head would be covered but if the lighting would allow, I would also like to see the mouth forming such expressions like a hard line with pursed lips or a snarl with the teeth bared. The idea behind the subject is to convey abject terror as well as illustrating that moment when the subject realizes that death has conquered them.

I know it's dark. But it is a commission that I am just stuck on. I hope you can help me out.

I've been looking for a good scarecrow stock for a long time. I live in the country, and those things never get old to me, I can always imagine them coming to life. And DA seems to be lacking a decent scarecrow stock.

I'm looking for something like this::thumb21261609:

That's the standard way I see them, except usually the forearms hang down (That's important, so many people on DA have it look like a crucifiction, and that's not how a traditional scarecrow is). But I think if someone was in the scarecrow suit, just bursting to get out, would really bring that stock to life, I want it to be full of action, having the hems of sleeves ripping, showing his arms twisting as if he's struggling to get out. Something like this: :thumb105723876: There was another one I was looking for, with a guy in a hoodie seeming to break out with effects around him.

And the way I've envisioned, crows would be flying off of him as if he just suddenly came to life with some straw falling out of his clothes.

And a second stock with him kneeling on the ground as if to propose, except with his head down and grim expression, if these were placed side by side, it could really tell a story of a scarecrow escaping and coming to life.

Outfit: Denim coveralls, white dress shirt (ripped across the chest maybe), brown hat, and straw coming out the sleeves and neck of the shirt. And some face paint to exaggerate his scarecrow features would look good.

Is this a good a pitch? It's something I've always wanted to make. :)

That's a great pitch. It's a very interesting and visual idea. To clarify though, and I can only speak for myself on this one, that image was not supposed to be a scarecrow. It was supposed to be a bumpkin being crucified.

I would be happy to add your request to the list, but I'm afraid that it will likely be quite a while before I get to it. The list is fairly long and almost all my time is currently taken with commercial projects.

So if you need this any time soon, you are probably better off collab'ing with another artist. If, on the other hand, you want to be surprised sometime in the far future...there's a good chance you will be ;-) .

I would really love to have a male stock image of the god Mars descending from flight with his spear to use as the antagonist/rival/lover of this original character:[link]

I'm involved in a large collaboration with several other artists (IRL) working on this project and I need male models. This is a mixed media performance art piece with musicians and dancers as well as the visual art provided by me which will be projected on screens as the backdrop.

I'm new to dA and not well known here so I don't know if you are interested in something like this but it would certainly be appreciated by this visual artist to get some good male stock. As it is, I'll be watching your page regardless because I think I can use some of your images. I need to do over 50 paintings so anything is helpful. :D

Thanks very much for the nice comment. If you'll let me know some more detail on what you would need for your Mars image, I'll let you know if I can do it. My biggest concern is that I don't have anything close to a costume that would do it justice.

Thanks for responding!

His costume is pretty minimal actually. He basically only wears a cuirass, a loincloth, boots and a helmet, oh and he carries a spear - all of which I can create myself (except the hand grip on the spear, I would need you to use a pole or something, if you could). It's really the descending from the air with the spear type of poses that I have a difficult time getting correct without a reference.

I'm looking for a pose that is the moment before his foot touches the ground. Something like a mid air contapposto with one knee slightly bent, hands gripping the spear as if to strike an opponent below. I'd like it to be dynamic and "in the action" so to speak. Any other kind of mid air spear fighting poses would be highly appreciated as well. Sometimes he's seen fighting from a chariot too, so any sort of pose that simulates pulling back against reins while wielding a spear would be great! Is this too tall an order? I noticed that you are creative with your repelling gear and seem pretty fit and flexible so I do think you could pull it off quite well if it was something that interested you. If you couldn't come up with a costume that would be fine because as I stated above, I can wing that without a ref - it's just the figure I really need. All you'd really need to wear would be just some bike shorts or whatever you felt comfortable with that still showed your legs (I need bear legs and arms - and chest or at least shoulders would be good too), and maybe a tank top if you are modest about showing too much skin. If you were ok with actually wearing a loincloth, that would be awesome but I don't really need you to if you'd rather be more clothed.

Thank you for considering this. I need to set up several mid air fight scenes and I can generally find female refs but the male ones are very difficult to find.

I'll tell you what, I'll give it a shot, but if I don't think it works we'll have to call it 'no foul'. ;-) The main issue it that I don't think I have the build for Mars, but we'll see. I've added it to the official production schedule here ( [link] ), but in light of everything that is going on right now I cannot commit to any certain time.

If that doesn't work for you, just let me know and I'll take it off the list. I think it is an intriguing idea, I just hope I can make it work.

That would be wonderful! Thank you! I appreciate your giving it a go. I'm sure any sort of flying stock will be useful to other people as well. It's hard to find that kind of thing (aside form Superman kind of stuff). A lot of people like to do angels and demons and winged creatures that need mid-air looking poses. As far as your build goes - well I can alter that too if I feel like I need to. Really when I'm drawing it's getting the weight and musculature correct that refs help me with. You know, making the pose realistic and such. I hate it when I spend a lot of time on a drawing only to sit back and go, "wait, the human body doesn't go that way!"

KNow what I mean? :p

It isn't so much a "need" for stock, as much as it is a "you asked now you're getting a suggestion" sort of thing.

How are you at fighting zombies?
Think about it, If you were caught up in a zombie apocalypses, a "zomb-pocalypses" if you will. What would you use for a weapon? Suppose you didn't have your typical Zombie fighting gear, i.e. a shovel, shotgun or cricket bat. I have yet to see anyone bludgeon a Zombie with a folding chair. You could be creative. What would your attack/defense strategy be?

As comedic or as frightening as you like, I'm a fan of Shaun of the Dead-esque things anyways.

I hope this helps spark your imagination. (no pun intended, I swear)
I look forward to seeing anything you come up with for any idea you come across. ^_^

How about some Gun stock, like not just pistols and machine guns, I mean like. Rocket launchers and "large" weapons. Ive been trying to draw guys with large weapons but never could find a proper reference.

Also I had an Idea, how about some Double Pistol stock, only this time of ones of the person poseing actually dodging the bullets, like some arched back or jumping through stuff. I bet you would have fun with that concept.

Oh nad one more thing, some ninja/samuri stock, cant find much of those.

Would like nothing better, let me tell you.

And I'm glad you mentioned that, because you may have the opportunity to see one of the young Miss Jades. My older daughter was cast to dance in a commercial for the Red Sox. She is an Irish Dancer and apparently one of the honchos on the team has been doing some sort of freaked-out jig (which the PR folks are constructing a marketing campaign around, good lord). Anyway, she ended up being one of the principal dancers in the spot, which should be airing in the Northeast around April. Not sure if you have a TV, but if you do you may see her. Let me know if you see it, that'd be a hoot.

Wow--how cool is THAT?! :D I best she's thrilled! (I didn't know what you were referring to, not being into sports, or up on current events--but thanks to Google, I know that it's apparently some guy named "Papelbon" that's known for doing silly things. I *think* the Red Sox might've won the World Series this year...or came close to it, or something like that--and it's tied in to that. Hard to tell, not being up on all the sports nomenclature! ;))

Anyway, having seen a video of him doing his little fake step dance, I can see why the PR folks are pouncing on it--and I'm sure the commercial will be terrific--and your daughter, marvelous, in it.

I don't actually have a tv--but I'm sure it'll be on Youtube--I hope so, as I'm now quite anxious to see it! :D

(And you know, I didn't mention the little Jades in my invitation...but the only thing more fun than having you and Mrs. Jade in the studio, doing some fun stock--would be doing some serious family portraits. Mother/daughter; singles; sisters; Mom & Dad; Dad/daughter... Do keep it in mind, should you ever be up my way! :))

Ok so lets give soem ideas, i see a lot of action stocks here!
But wait! There is no money dealing here? How come!
Put some Trademarket, some Capitalist actions, like... taking money of a ATM or some money exchange betwen people (stock art!!!)

Well if you are not up to a capitalist action...
How about some Pimp looking Mr.J?

Last idea!
Ok keep up with me! Manchester United! YAAAAAY! JADE the soccer player!

Of these, I dig the capitalist concept. Play with that one a bit more. Is there anything that you could really use? Anything that could blend the theme with some kind of action. I'm thinking of a pic of a trader jumping out of a window after a bad day on the floor. Anything else like that?

A suicide trader?
Well To much "Robocop" there XP (i hope you understand my point here XP no body seems to remmember that scene).

Well lets take a look:

How about a Fast food, fake smile guy? Who knows what he do with his money....

People handling money, maybe buying something, maybe show how some of thoes action heros buy those guns? (to much videogame!!!)

Maybe some secret money exchange, like, exchange briefcases (idea based in U.S. Marshals - GREAT MOVIE!)

--------------- U.U ---------------------

As you can see i'm good to resume ideas... not to talk about tham...

I'll try to explain the ideas with scenes:

A Trader winned fortune of millons of dollars, but to much money can give you to much trouble...
A guy running! Holding a Sidepack! Looking to his back! Somone is following him! Someone wants whatever he have there! Green paper is flying from inside the bag... is that money?
Gunshots, Blood on the floor. "Well done, your payment is in your account".
"I'm doing this to givr mi children a better future!"
"we will share the money!"
Betrayal!
Gunshots and explosions
Mexican Standoff!
Bang! one survives!

I'm thinkin' Highlander style, various styles and techniques pit against one another. Blocks, parries, deflections, thrusts, etc...Yeah, it'd probably require a second model though...if you can swing that though, that would be awesome.
