A Guy Walks Into A BarIt was a cold night and because of a certain "employment" I was titled with, I was out late at night. It was about 3 in the morning and I finished my shift early, there wasn't much action tonight so I left. It had just started to rain and my house was still several blocks away and I had the misfortune of being in front of a bar.
Everywhere else was closed so I shrugged my shoulders and escalated into the bar. Even early in the morning, Edy's Bar still had people in it. There was a decent amount of people, maybe 13 that were minding their own business and talking amongst themselves in their own petite groups. A few loners looked my way, older guys winking in my direction as their lips curved up in a smirk. However, I wasn't interested. Guys at the bar just weren't my thing.
I sat down and sighed, ordering a cocktail and waited. I slouched over with a sigh and yawned tired, hoping the storm would pass by soon. I looked towards the glass door, hoping to see any change in the weather, hope

A guy walks into a bar... and leaves.I scrub the bar clean for the tenth time in the past hour and glance up once again at the man before resuming my work of filling another drink order. I've seen that expression on so many, and most likely will see it on many more.
He looks like he's just one more drink away from that point where he loses hope and leaves.
Three beers served to a younger man at the other end of the bar who takes them back to his table of raucously laughing friends and I take another look at this one.
High end cognac and a necklace that sits unclaimed on the table; the bottle swiftly dwindling. I want to tell him to give it up, she's not coming, but I'm just a bar tender. Been one for years. Just want my tip at the end of the night so I let it be.
He sets down his glass after finishing it, check his watch, then runs his hand through his hair again. It was well groomed before, not so much now, and the last trace of hope leaves. There goes the drink I predicted.
I've seen that expression on many as I've said

The blue reflects first off the chrome shaker, reflecting a spot on the stack of coasters. It’s the algae-tinged green-blue of an old lake, a hint of ancient wisdom in the brand new bar Alain asked you in to do business. You follow the color to your cuff. Your blue has less green, a stretch of sky at ten in the morning, a statement of freedom in the awkward spot Alain has put you in. It's broken only by a single cloud, an opal cufflink with only promise, no meaning. You try again to focus on the-

The Necklace     The cool blue lighting in the lounge that evening whisked me into an ethereal realm bathed in moonlight.  If I hadn’t known any better, I would have sworn I’d see stars if I looked up from the bar, rather than the dark nothingness beyond the lights hanging from the ceiling.  A glass of Courvoisier hung precariously in my hand, my fingers dancing along the glass while I took in the sweet smell wafting forth from the glass’s edge, anticipating its taste against my lips.  I was simply biding my time; I was waiting for someone.
     Her.
Mysterious and elusive, she had been a woman of few words.  A momentary glace that couldn’t be mistaken, I had approached her.  Introductions omitted, she let me know what was on her mind.

Her hands then slowly reached up behind her silk neck, her f

CONTEST: A Guy Walks Into A Bar...

Over the next several weeks I will be posting a series of images we used for a project with Garamond Magazine that all have a common visual theme; i.e. A guy (or gal) walks into a bar...

I thought it would be fun to use some of our reference images for a creative writing contest. It's easy, just write a short scene or character vignette inspired by the reference image. Note: There will be multiple contests, one for each reference image that we post. This is the first one.

Dang it, I started writing and then forgot about it. Can I still use the picture to write a story or is it only for the contest? I'll put a link here and credit it and everything.
